QupZilla 1.4.1 released!

First quick bugfix version in 1.4 cycle is now released.

I also want to note that 1.4 tree is available at its own branch at git.
Development branch for next version will have 1.5.0 number and will eventually be released as 1.6.0 stable. So that means odd numbers for development versions and even for stable versions.

  • fixed websearchbar not respecting select all on click settings
  • fixed certificates from custom path disappearing on saving preferences
  • fixed showing empty back/forward history menu upon restoring session
  • fixed duplicating current url in history when restoring session
  • fixed instantly showing popup when clicking on back/forward button

Download: source code
As usual, builds will be available later.

Known issues: Windows builds with MSVC2010 apparently crash on sites with animated GIFs. Looking into that issue now. (WebKit #112567)

    1. Hmm, I'm not 100% clear on what was done when building the "oldwin141" (using MSVC2008, aka VC9.0).

      @David
Did you ever manage, or even attempt, to get QtWebKit 2.3 (Qt 4.8.4) to build using MSVC2008? Which would then make it run on Windows 2000 SP4.

Looking at the version numbers in MS Win, it's like this:

      qupzilla141.exe [setup] (built w msvc2010):

      QtCore4.dll 4.8.4.0
      QtGui4.dll 4.8.4.0
      QtNetwork4.dll 4.8.4.0
      QtScript.dll 4.8.4.0
      QtSql4.dll 4.8.4.0
      QtWebKit4.dll 4.10.0.0 WebKit 537.21
      QtXmlPatterns4.dll 4.8.4.0

      qupzilla141-oldwin.zip (built w msvc2008):

      QtCore4.dll 4.8.2.0
      QtGui4.dll 4.8.2.0
      QtNetwork4.dll 4.8.2.0
      QtScript.dll 4.8.2.0
      QtSql4.dll 4.8.2.0
      QtWebKit4.dll 4.9.2.0
      QtXmlPatterns4.dll --

There's no later 2.2.x as far as I can see. Still, those DLLs say 4.8.2....
I'm just a wee bit confused by all these version numbers :-\

I was wondering which version of WebKit the oldwin141 has, compared to QupZilla 1.3.5 (yeah, I can install it all and check it out by running the program). It would be very nice to have a late, fresh WebKit on an old Windows 2000; it helps me a lot and of course QupZilla 1.3.5 already does an awesome job for me in that respect so many thanks for that

  3. Great work!
The only fact why i don't use Qupzilla as my default browser is that the facebook chat isn't working for me. The browser can't connect to the facebook chat :( I'm using Qupzilla Windows 7 32bit version.
I would be very thankful if anyone can tell me how to solve this :)

  5. Just a post to say thanks for this little gem.

I'm an opera user since its begninning, and in over a decade I haven't found nothing comparable,

Now that opera is (likely) going crap QupZilla looks like the only viable alternative.

It lacks ethe great email client, and the operalink feature but lighter and faster.

Any hope to have, at lest the sync feature, in the feature ?

Would be nice to have an extension/plugin/integrated feature/whatever to sync QZ with operalink and or the the chrome or firefox cloned features.

    Thanks again.

  6. From another old Opera addict and thanks to `The Solutor` I tried QupZilla on a heavy duty javascript web application of mine. On a Linux Desktop (KDE) much faster than every other browsers and just a very few css glitches (input type="file" for exemple).
But the best fonts rendering ((almost like Opera... but still far behind the Konqueror proweses)
If the further tests are of the same quality, especially on the unavoidable gmail (At first glance much better than Opera but that's not so difficult), Your Tube and FaceDump (I wait for my children answers....), i will forcibly turns my users to QupZilla just to ease my developper work
Keep this awesome small RAM footprint and Bravo for the overall quality. A scarce component of the to-day so called Open Source

    Qupzilla Portable 1.4.1...

    GREAT!

    Thanx a lot.

PS/ The only odd thing I see now is that I can not register my opinions from Qupzilla, I have to do it from Firefox ... |:-(

    Ooooppppssss :-P

    Sorry...

    From Opera... :-)

  10. Does not render HTML 5 and cannot save an image after right clicking the image. I must uninstall.

  11. Great browser, another Opera refugee here.

The things I miss are a noscript and requestpolicy like features to disable javascript and third-party http requests per site, https everywhere extension, along with mouse gestures.

  14. i just want share my thoughts. I dont have bad purpose, and i really i want thank all of you guys for such of this excellent browser and your amazing effort and work into this... :)

For me, its a bit wierd, odd actually when a major number of browsers in Windows, supports in one way or another html5 video (mp4, h264, webm/vp8-9, theora) and audio (mp3, ogg, etc) tags, html5 web audio capability...

I was trying to find in the github, here, in the main site of qupzilla, something which will drive me how to add support for html5 video and audio in Windows OS, by compiling myself the source, but i havent see anything related to this...

I already know about the posibility using gstreamer in Linux for adding such of this support. In other hand, in windows, i don't know how to do it... I havent find anything related to this. Maybe i havent search as good i can, or perhaps somewhere is something which already written but i havent see it yet...

The absense of html5 video and audio, in my honest opinion in Windows OS, its a serious thing...

If someone knows a way to compile the source or add with some way support for mp4, h264, webm, etc etc... will be handy for your loyal windows users, to know how they do it, by writing some short instructions somewhere.

Finally closing my thoughts, i want to say something last.

I discovered webgl from qupzilla:config is disabled. I dont know why, and this is strange to me also, because in the latest versions of qupzilla (1.4.x) the features saying about webgl.

Maybe all of this things, its in my imagination only or in my... unexpirience or my unwill to do more research about it. Im really sorry if my message looking and sound bad... Its not my purpose... ( and really im sorry for my english :) )

    1. Hi,
it is only supported and working on Linux. I haven't managed to build it on Windows. However, WebGL is working fine on Qt 5, so maybe with Qt 5.1 Windows builds will be shipped with this version.

  17. About the animated GIF issue, yeah, it crashes repeatedly when there's an excessive amount of anim gifs on a page. Like animated smilies, that's where I've been bitten by this bug.

Q: how does one disable *all* animated gifs in QupZilla? Or at least stop them all on an active page?

That would be a good enough workaround, when I use FF or Opera, I always run with all animated gifs turned off (for good). Never miss 'em.

    1. Hi,
you can try for example adding "*.gif" (without quotes) rule into AdBlock.

    2. > you can try for example adding "*.gif" (without quotes) rule into AdBlock.

Well... That would really be obtrusive to the looks of a Web page, since it would "kill" all GIF images on the site in Q. Not something I'd go ahead with unless there was absolutely no other choice to hinder QupZilla from crashing. I just want the GIF animation to "stop" (or never be started). Presumably WebKit can do this, there has to be some sort of control command to the rendering engine to achieve this..? I've never really thought of this with Google Chrome. (I don't recall any such control in Apple Safari for Windows, I stopped using that quite a long time ago now since it became too buggy and too big memory footprint.)

    3. Stopping animated GIFs (or disabling them, showing only the 1st frame) apparently isn't that easy with WebKit :-( People have been trying to mitigate this, e.g. there's a Chrome Extension called 'Paused!' which is fairly good at doing the trick.
      http://www.simplehelp.net/2011/08/04/how-to-disable-animated-gifs-in-google-chrome/

The other suggestion there is a .js script which makes the ESC key do what it has always done in FF/Gecko. No idea if that would work in QupZilla too. Maybe since it works in Google Chrome.

    4. Hi,
yep, that userscript should work (with GreaseMonkey extension)

      Delete
    5. Very good, then that's a viable and useful workaround then for the anim gif crash problem. I don't understand how to "install" that .js script into QupZilla though... Have to read up on it I suppose, but when I looked for Wiki/docs before I didn't find much at all I must say

    6. Just make sure you have GreaseMonkey extension enabled and click install here http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/80588

  18. Hi,

For Windows, can you make the Mouse Gestures extension work for the right-mouse button? Or at least make it configurable? It's very awkward to use the middle-mouse button to do the mouse gesture.

Thanks for reading! And keep up the good work with QupZilla!

  19. Thank you David so much for the OLD WIN version of QupZilla 1.4.1. It works great. Please, please, please don't stop supporting it because there are number of people that love QupZilla but they use old systems on older computers.

Once again, thank you very much for your brilliant work, keep it up!

  20. @David
About this "oldwin141" (built with MSVC2008, aka VC9.0 so that it works on Win 2000 SP4). I'm really interested in it as well (see my comment above, reply to Terry's post).
But I don't quite understand what it is you have done here, it looks like a version regression :-( Your release blog post for QupZilla 1.3.5 was:

    > After 2 weeks, I finally managed to build 1.3.5 release for Windows.
    > I had some issues with MSVC 2008 and also had lack of free time,
    > so sorry about the delay.
    >
    > Windows version is now shipped with latest version of Qt (4.8.3) and QtWebKit (2.2.3).

Looking inside the zip file you created

    qupzilla141-oldwin.zip (built w msvc2008):

    QtCore4.dll 4.8.2.0
    QtGui4.dll 4.8.2.0
    QtNetwork4.dll 4.8.2.0
    QtScript.dll 4.8.2.0
    QtSql4.dll 4.8.2.0
    QtWebKit4.dll 4.9.2.0

Comparing this with the installation I have now of QupZilla 1.3.5 (posting this in it):

    QtCore4.dll 4.8.3.0
    QtGui4.dll 4.8.3.0
    QtNetwork4.dll 4.8.3.0
    QtScript.dll 4.8.3.0
    QtSql4.dll 4.8.3.0
    QtWebKit4.dll 4.9.3.0 WebKit 534.34

Why was QupZilla 1.4.1 not built with QtWebKit 2.2.3? I was under the impression that was what you were going to do, but it seems you've used 2.2.2.

    http://qt-project.org/uploads/community_updates/changes-4.8.3

If I go to the "real" 1.4.1 and look (built with msvc2010) it looks like this:

    QtCore4.dll 4.8.4.0
    QtGui4.dll 4.8.4.0
    QtNetwork4.dll 4.8.4.0
    QtScript.dll 4.8.4.0
    QtSql4.dll 4.8.4.0
    QtWebKit4.dll 4.10.0.0 WebKit 537.21
    QtXmlPatterns4.dll 4.8.4.0

That's more recent versions of everything, just as you've announced here.

It would be very nice to have a late, fresh WebKit on an old Windows 2000; it helps me a lot and of course QupZilla 1.3.5 already does an awesome job for me in that respect so many thanks for that.

Just to clarify all this: did you ever manage, or even attempt, to get QtWebKit 2.3 (Qt 4.8.4) to build using MSVC2008? Which would then make it run on Windows 2000 SP4.

  21. Hey, I'm trying to find a way to completely replace the Qupzilla icon with one I made myself with the git version. For some reason replacing the icons with the ones I made isn't doing anything. Any way I could get some help?

    ReplyDelete
  22. Sorry, I forgot to add that I am doing so on Arch Linux with a modified version of the AUR's qupzilla-qt5 PKGBUILD that copies the icons I created and replaces the ones in the source directory BEFORE the package is built.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Alright, so that's weird. My first comment seems not to have been added? Well, prefacing what I explained in the second/previous comment, I am trying to replace the Qupzilla icon with a set of my own. I tried simply replacing the icons and pixmaps before the build but that didn't work. I also tried adding it to the elementary theme's folders but that didn't work either.

    1. Changing the pixmap that is used in .desktop file should be enough.

Firstly I want to thank you for you work you , I noticed an incompatibility issue between qupzilla browser and microsoft mail service (msn, outlook, live, hotmail ), in fact I have an outlook email account , whenever I want to view has my inbox, I always this preliminary message "Your browser is out of date" on the home page , and microsoft offers me to use another browser, I would like that you try to solve this problem between qupzilla browser and microsoft services mail (outlook, msn, live, hotmail)

  25. I replaced every image in the package I built from git and even made duplicates of the images with a separate name that I saved in the .desktop file, trying both absolute paths and names, used gtk-update-icon-cache as both root and current user, restarted, and it never changed. I'm not sure why it's working.

  27. Using 1.4.0 in Ubuntu. I keep getting randomly disconnected/logged off from Google Drive and sometimes from other Google services (though the problem appears to be more pronounced with Google Drive, sometimes causing unsaved data loss).

Any idea as to what the problem might be? I need GDrive for work and this is the only thing keeping me from adopting Qupzilla as main browser. Thanks!
